Si l’on demande à SJ Cora à quoi pourrait ressembler sa maison idéale, elle répond en souriant : « elle devrait avoir des roues ou au moins des ailes.  Pour SJ Cora, arriver chez soi signifie se mettre en chemin.   

Fille d’une mère irlandaise et d’un père allemand, elle a besoin de courir le monde, un besoin qui s’atténue dès qu’elle pose le pied sur l’Île Verte mais qui n’est jamais assouvi. Si SJ Cora est en route, ce n’est pas pour arriver quelque part, mais pour accomplir ce qui l’anime. Un exercice d’équilibriste entre les passions et les styles musicaux, entre chez-soi et les aventures de la vie que l’on ne peut vivre qu’en chemin et capter qu’avec des instruments. 

C’est ainsi que naît sa musique. Comme une corde tendue entre deux arbres enracinés dans des mondes différents et sur laquelle évolue SJ Cora – petite, menue, gracile et virtuose, à la fois étonnamment puissante et énergique. SJ Cora s’inspire de musiciennes telles que Ana Ternheim, PJ Harvey et Björk tout en demeurant elle-même. Un élégant numéro d’équilibre qui, l’espace de quelques instants, nourrit l’illusion que les cordes d’un piano, d’une guitare ou d’un violon peuvent faire office de ponts solides à deux voies. 

« Mon cœur est irlandais, ma tête est allemande », aime à dire SJ Cora.  

Son cœur, à la fois petite boussole, moteur et indicateur, l’a poussée à voyager et l’a rendue pensive. SJ Cora le suit. Elle est ainsi hors du temps, car les vraies affaires de cœur répondent rarement à un concept de marketing stratégique et ambitieux. Mais elles sont vraies et authentiques. 

À la recherche d’un nouveau violon, SJ Cora, musicienne de formation, se rend en Suisse où elle s’aménage un « camp de base ». Puis, suivant l’impulsion de son cœur, elle s’envole spontanément pour Nashville/Tennessee et y produit son premier album solo « Another World ». Au cours d’un voyage en Allemagne, elle tombe amoureuse du batteur de son groupe. Son cœur dit alors « oui », rejetant toutes les considérations stratégiques. Désormais, un porte-bébé se trouve dans le bus de tournée. 

Une rencontre fortuite avec l’artiste d’exception Paul Wallfisch aboutit à l’album « Automagic » produit à Berlin, New York City, Krefeld et Essen et sur lequel des artistes renommés tels que Larry Mullins aka Tobi Dammit (Iggy Pop/ Nick Cave), Christian Bongers (BOTANICA), Geoffrey Burton (Sophie Hunger), Martin Wenk (Calexico) et des musiciens de l’orchestre philharmonique d’Essen se relaient et se passent les instruments. 

Intuitive, attachée à la terre et expérimentatrice, SJ Cora concilie musique classique, folk, rock et les sons insolents et rebelles de la musique alternative indépendante. Le sentiment d’être sur la bonne voie quand on suit sa boussole intérieure acquiert ainsi une première visualisation. Synesthète, son monde est coloré, les frontières entre les couleurs, les mouvements et les sons n’y existent pas. L’art sous toutes ses formes d’expression – pour SJ Cora c’est un seul et grand sentiment qu’elle souhaite désormais partager avec les autres. Ainsi, dans ses performances, elle réunit et mêle à sa musique différents domaines artistiques comme la danse moderne et la peinture pour créer ce qu’elle appelle le « son bohème indie ». 

Actuellement, l’artiste Tanja Prill de Hamm fait également partie de ce cosmos. Elle remplit ses toiles avec les textes poétiques de SJ Cora et leurs descriptions dansables de scènes quotidiennes insolites. 

Suivre l’impulsion de son cœur signifie être ouvert : SJ Cora est sur sa voie. Où la mènera-t-elle ? Cela la surprendra elle-même.

  If you ask SJ Cora what her perfect home would look like, the answer you’ll get with a smile is: “It needs to have wheels or at least wings.” In her case, settling in is all about setting off on new adventures.   

As the child of an Irish mother and a German father, her inherent urge to travel is regularly soothed but never fully satisfied when setting foot on the Emerald Isle. The whole point of SJ Cora’s journey is not to arrive but to enjoy the sights and to develop along the way. It’s a constant balancing act between passions and styles of music, between home comforts and the adventures of life, those which can only be discovered when travelling the world and only captured through musical instruments.   

This creates music. Like a rope. Tied between two trees firmly rooted in different universes. SJ Cora manages to navigate it elegantly – small, delicate, graceful and virtuosic, while evoking a sense of amazing power and energy. Inspired by musicians such as Ana Ternheim, PJ Harvey, Björk and, needless to say, SJ Cora herself, her work achieves a delightful balance which momentarily appears to transform piano, guitar and violin strings into sturdy, two-way bridges.   

“My heart beats to an Irish tune, while my mind thinks German,” says SJ Cora passionately.  
SJ Cora has sent her heart, this small compass, motor and window to emotions and feelings, on numerous journeys, thereby putting it in a pensive mood: She always follows its direction. SJ Cora thus bucks the trend of the times: Real affairs of the heart are not generally the best starting point when it comes to developing a strategic and ambitious marketing concept. But they are, nonetheless, real and original.  
When searching for a new violin, the trained musician travelled to Switzerland, where she set up camp.  And because her heart told her to do so, she instinctively caught a plane to Nashville/Tennessee and recorded her first solo album “Another World” there. Whilst touring through Germany, she fell in love with the drummer of her band. Her heart said “yes” and put a stop to any strategic plans she may have had. In the future, the tour bus will need to accommodate a baby changing bag, too.   

A chance meeting with the exceptional artist Paul Wallfisch led to the album “Automagic”, which was produced in Berlin, NYC, Krefeld and Essen and features many renowned musicians, including Larry Mullins aka Tobi Dammit (Iggy Pop/ Nick Cave), Christian Bongers (BOTANICA), Geoffrey Burton (Sophie Hunger), Martin Wenk (Calexico) as well as members of the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra. 

In an intuitive, down-to-earth and experimental manner, SJ Cora bridges the gap perfectly between classical music, folk, rock and the in-your-face, rebellious sounds of independent and alternative genres. The feeling of being right when you follow your own built-in compass is there for all to see.  

As a synesthet, her world is bright and colourful; a world without boundaries between colours, movements and sounds. Art in all its forms – for SJ Cora, it’s a unique and utterly amazing feeling. She now wishes to share this with others and has started combining various art forms such as modern dance and painting with her music during live performances, describing it as a “bohemian indie sound”.   
Currently part of this cosmos is the astonishing artist Tanja Prill. She fills canvas after canvas with SJ Cora’s poetic texts and her portrayals of quirky daily life that are guaranteed to get everyone dancing.  

Following your heart means being open: SJ Cora has decided to go down her own path. Where will it lead to? Instead of knowing, she’d rather be surprised by whatever it may have in store for her.

 Wenn man SJ Cora fragt, wie ein perfektes Zuhause aussehen könnte, antwortet sie mit einem Lächeln :  „Es sollte Räder oder zumindest Flügel haben.“ Bei sich anzukommen bedeutet für sie, aufzubrechen.   

 Als Kind einer irischen Mutter und eines deutschen Vaters treibt sie Fernweh um, das regelmäßig beim Betreten der Grünen Insel gelindert, aber nie gestillt wird. SJ Cora ist unterwegs, nicht um anzukommen, sondern um zu vervollkommnen, was sie umtreibt. Der Spagat zwischen Leidenschaften und Musikstilen, zwischen Zuhause  und den Abenteuern des Lebens, denen man nur unterwegs begegnen und die man nur mit Instrumenten einfangen kann.   

So entsteht Musik. Wie ein Seil. Gespannt zwischen zwei Bäumen, die in unterschiedlichen Welten wurzeln. Auf ihm bewegt sich SJ Cora – klein, zierlich, grazil und virtuos, zugleich verblüffend kraftvoll wie energisch. Inspiriert von Musikerinnen wie Ana Ternheim, PJ Harvey, Björk und doch einfach nur SJ Cora. Ein eleganter Balance-Akt, der für die Dauer von Momenten die Illusion nährt, dass Klavier-, Gitarren- und Geigensaiten als tragfähige, zweispurige Brücken taugen.   

„Mein Herzschlag ist irisch, mein Kopf denkt deutsch“, sagt SJ Cora gern.  
Das Herz, dieser kleine Kompass, Motor und Verräter hat SJ Cora auf Reisen geschickt und nachdenklich gemacht: Sie folgt ihm. Damit fällt SJ Cora aus der Zeit: Echte Herzensangelegenheiten taugen selten für ein strategisches wie ambitioniertes Marketingkonzept. Aber sie sind echt und ursprünglich.  
Auf der Suche nach einer neuen Geige reist die studierte Musikerin in die Schweiz, wo sie sich ein Basislager einrichtet.  Weil ihr Herz es ihr rät, fliegt sie spontan nach Nashville/Tennessee um dort ihr erstes Soloalbum“ Another World“ einzuspielen. Unterwegs in Deutschland, verliebt sie sich in den Schlagzeuger ihrer Band. Das Herz sagt „Ja“ und erteilt allen strategischen Überlegungen eine Absage. Im Tourbus steht künftig die Babytasche.   

 Eine zufällige Begegnung mit dem Ausnahmekünstler Paul Wallfisch mündet in das Album „Automagic“, auf dem sich namhafte Künstler wie Larry Mullins aka Tobi Dammit (Iggy Pop/ Nick Cave), Christian Bongers (BOTANICA), Geoffrey Burton (Sophie Hunger), Martin Wenk (Calexico) sowie Musiker der Essener Philharmoniker die Instrumente in die Hand geben. Produziert wird „Automagic“ in Berlin, NYC, Krefeld und Essen.  

Intuitiv, erdverbunden und experimentierfreudig vollzieht SJ Cora den Spagat zwischen der klassischen Musik, dem Folk, Rock und den rotzigen, aufbegehrenden Tönen des Independent- und Alternative-Genres. Das Gefühl, richtig zu liegen, wenn man dem ureigenen Kompass folgt, erfährt so eine erste Visualisierung.  

Als Synästhetin ist ihre Welt farbig, Grenzen zwischen Farben, Bewegungen und Tönen existieren darin nicht. Kunst in all ihren Ausdrucksformen – für SJ Cora ist das ein einziges, großes Gefühl. Das möchte sie nun mit anderen teilen und folglich führt sie in ihren Performances unterschiedliche Sparten wie Modern Dance und Malerei mit ihrer Musik zusammen und beschreibt diese als  „Bohemian-Indie-Sound“.   
 Teil dieses Kosmos ist aktuell die Hammer Künstlerin Tanja Prill. Leinwand um Leinwand füllt sie mit SJ Coras poetischen Texten und ihren tanzbaren Beschreibungen kurioser Alltagsszenen.  

Dem Herzen zu folgen heißt, offen zu sein: SJ Cora ist auf ihrem Weg. Wohin er sie führt? Das wird sie selbst überraschen.
